BIG, the Bjarke Ingels Group, has been awarded the prestigious international competition to design the new Hamburg State Opera on HafenCity's waterfront. This major cultural project will unite Hamburg's opera and ballet companies under one roof, offering innovative performance spaces, production facilities, and public amenities along the Elbe River. The design draws inspiration from the city's long-standing relationship with the harbor, envisioning the opera as a topographic structure with stepped terraces rising from the water. This unique form not only provides multiple access points but also creates a new public route connecting the riverfront with the surrounding district. Inside, the foyer acts as a central public zone, while the main auditorium is strategically designed to enhance acoustics and provide even sightlines. The surrounding landscape, meticulously designed by BIG Landscape, incorporates tidal zones and vegetated buffers to support local species and enhance biodiversity. The project aims to establish the opera as an open, permeable public institution, offering new perspectives on the harbor and expanding cultural access along the waterfront. BIG has also been recognized for other notable projects, including the Gelephu Mindfulness City in Bhutan and the Sail Congress Center in Rouen, France. Meanwhile, the Suzhou Museum of Contemporary Art in China continues to progress towards completion.
