It's Lights Out for Brad Pitt in the New Trailer for 'Top Gun: Maverick' Director's 'F1' (2)

The final trailer for the hotly-anticipated F1 movie from Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski teases an exhilarating, high-octane drama, starring Brad Pitt as former Formula One driver Sonny Hayes, dubbed "the greatest that never was," who comes out of retirement to mentor a hotshot up-and-comer. The preview goes full throttle with compelling racing footage and a look at the redemption story at the center of the film, which is set to debut in theaters and IMAX in North America on June 27, and internationally on June 25.

Warner Bros. and Apple Original Films have revved up the marketing campaign for F1 in recent months, starting with an action-packed Super Bowl teaser in February, but the latest trailer offers a final sneak peek of the movie before it races into theaters next month. It shows Pitt's "lone wolf" character gearing up to hit the racetrack for a few more laps, but it looks like he might hit a few roadblocks along the way with Damon Idris' rookie prodigy Joshua "Noah" Pearce, who is "intent on setting his own pace," per the film's official synopsis (below).

"Dubbed 'the greatest that never was,' Sonny Hayes (Brad Pitt) was FORMULA 1's most promising phenom of the 1990s until an accident on the track nearly ended his career. Thirty years later, he's a nomadic racer-for-hire when he's approached by his former teammate Ruben Cervantes (Javier Bardem), owner of a struggling FORMULA 1 team that is on the verge of collapse. Ruben convinces Sonny to come back to FORMULA 1 for one last shot at saving the team and being the best in the world. He'll drive alongside Joshua Pearce (Damson Idris), the team's hotshot rookie intent on setting his own pace. But as the engines roar, Sonny's past catches up with him, and he finds that, in FORMULA 1, your teammate is your fiercest competition—and the road to redemption is not something you can travel alone."

Kosinski directs F1 from a screenplay by Ehren Kruger (who co-wrote Top Gun: Maverick). The filmmaker also produces the film with Pitt, Jerry Bruckheimer, Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner, Chad Oman, and seven-time Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton, while Daniel Lupi serves as executive producer. In addition to Pitt and Idris, the movie stars Kerry Condon, Tobias Menzies, Kim Bodnia, and Javier Bardem, as well as cameos from actual F1 drivers and teams, though the movie centers on the fictional Apex Grand Prix (APXGP).

Joseph Kosinski Has Prioritized Practical Effects Over CGI

Kosinski has certainly proven that he has a "Need for Speed," as he opted to bring the spirit of his critically acclaimed 2022 movie, Top Gun: Maverick, to his upcoming Formula One film by prioritizing practical effects over CGI to capture the intensity of speed of motor racing. He shot F1 on actual Grand Prix circuits during real race weekends, including the likes of Silverstone, Monza, and Suzuka, where the team competed against the titans of the sport. Pitt also had to learn to drive a modified racing car at high speeds, as opposed to using a simulation.

While there are a number of similarities that can be drawn between Kosinski's approach to making Top Gun: Maverick and F1, his latest project also has a few key differences, especially since portions of the movie were filmed at real live events. He will likely be hoping to replicate the hypersonic run of his Tom Cruise actioner, as that movie ended up grossing nearly $1.5 billion worldwide, making it a major box office success. Only time will tell but F1 is quickly speeding up to its June release date, which comes ahead of the 2025 Austrian Grand Prix.
